| Hello All,
I thought I would take some time off screenwriting...my script is due tomorrow...I along with 11 others were chosen to have their script deconstructed/workshop by Todd Solondz when he comes in two weeks. He's the writer/director for such films as Welcome to the Dollhouse and Happiness. I don't understand of all the scripts chosen, why mine was. It's nothing like his style....and it's totally not close to being finished. Other than that I'm finishing up my documentary, by finishing I mean haven't touched it for two weeks, I'm going into production of my third film in a month and it's basically not ready. No cast, no locked script, no location, no nothing.... I'm also planning on submitting my first two films to festivals, but haven't decided which to submit to yet.
I'm probably making film school sound incredibly boring and life draining, but it's not boring. I'm depressed now because I'm overworked and stressed, but it's awesome. Everyday, every time I touch the camera, every time my script gets a table reading, every time I get to light as if I'm Christopher Doyle, it's all awesome. But like everything, it's not for the weak.
| A glimpse into my life as a film student.
Weekdays 800am rise. 900 leave the apartment 950 arrive at campus. 10 - 9pm Class Classes usually go overtime so my eta back home is 1030 - 11pm. 1100 - 1130 dinner 1130- 2:30/300am studying, writing, storyboarding, etc....
Weekends. Saturday 9am - 6/7pm shooting directing exercises in crews Sunday 9am - 6pm shooting directing exercises in crews.
Start all over again.
I now understand why people in this industry are addicted to: a. coffee b. cigarettes c. crack
I love it, but I wish I had time to sleep/eat/pee/zone out/have a life.
It's still totally worth every penny.
| Hello folks, I'm tired. Orientation is over, and so is the partying. I've become really psyched about this program! The amount of material to digest is staggering, especially on insurance and loading the Super 16, but this program is totally worth every loan penny. The faulty is amazing. If not a bit intimidating. They're so kind. These incredible women and men have worked on some great films; Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Lord of the Rings I, II, III, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Matrix, etc.... The school isn't officially done, but will be next month. We'll have an opening ceremony with Jackie Chan and Brett Ratner(a tisch alum), so we've been taking a lot of publicity photos. It's a bit much for me to digest. I can't believe I'm actually here and I'm actually doing this. It's quite intensive. I need to figure out what I'm doing for my MOS (silent film) and get that script completed before production in October. Then in December we have to make a documentary, the only film in our first year we can shoot outside Singapore. I can't wait! School starts on Monday. Wish me luck. I'll need it for the acting and screenwriting class.

| Hello World. I'm engaged! I also just got into Columbia University. (officially) | | |
| I miss Nihon. I'm afraid I bawled at Amakusa airport, on Amakusa airlines, and on Korean Air flying out of Fukuoka. On the latter I got strange stares from Ghana's national soccer team. All those I love were there sending me off from Amakusa; Yuichi, Yumiko, Misaki, Keishi, Sara, Mika and her husband, and Mr. Fukushima. As I was heading out to the plane, Yuichi yelled "Gambatte" from the observation platform. I could see them all waving as my plane took off. Oh how my heart aches. Oh how I wish to return. I thought Japan had loads of bureaucratic crap, but Singapore is just as bad if not worse. Getting a student visa is a ridiculous process of HIV tests, chest xrays, week long processing and you can't do anything in Singapore without it. Finding an apartment is just as hard with even more bureaucratic shit. I'm looking to pay over 700 dollars (US) for a small room which resembles a closet. YAY. I assumed that Singapore would be more foreign friendly than it is, but I was wrong. In other news I registered for classes yesterday, they're making us take 18 units. Who needs a life right? My classes: Editing, Production Management, Aesthetics, Directors Workshop Beginners, Motion Picture Camera Techniques, Location Sound, Actors Craft, Fundamentals of Screenwriting. I guess I'm a bit homesick. I keep expecting to find Japan in Singapore. I want to say "sumimasen" at restaurants or when I bump into people. I am disappointed when I'm not given a wet towel or even a napkin. And I miss the rice fields and the slow living, not to mention the healthy food. Nihon ni ikitai. | | |
